Update

Well, a decision has been made. In the midst of updating my Terms of Use I came to the conclusion that Resources by Lolly K has run it's course. My little experiment was fun to say the least, but the time required to run two blogs and stores that complement each other seems unwarranted.

I sent a message out this morning to my followers on Teachers Pay Teachers (see below) outlining how any products that are updated for the migration will be updated at the RBLK store for those who have made those purchases to upload the updated file. I'm unsure how long the process will take but I will telegraph a final date allowing plenty of time for people to access the updates.

I want to thank all those who have supported the blog and the store, it has been appreciated.

Here is the message I sent my TpT followers today:

Dear Followers,

Thank you so much for your support over the 18 months this little project has been up and running. Resources by Lolly K came about due to some requests I received via my other blog/store (Elementary Observations). In an effort to keep my Montessori and general works separate RBLK was born. 

Unfortunately the experiment has run its course and I have decided to merge the two after all. The majority of my products would easily fit under the "Montessori-inspired" banner and as such the time and energy to run two stores seems unwarranted. 

As part of the process I will be updating all of the items that will be moved over to the other store, so they are branded as such. I will upload the these updates to this store as well, as they roll out, so that you can download the up to date file as it become available. I will leave this store open for a reasonable amount of time after the migration so that everyone has a reasonable opportunity to obtain the updates for their purchases for free. I will give a warning of a final date once the migration is complete. I want to wrap up the store in the most fair and equitable way possible.

Tumbleweeds & Cobwebs

It's been a little quiet around the blog lately, so much has been happening in other areas of my life. My health continues to go up and down, which is something I can expect to go on for a while. The tutoring studio is plodding along - I am contemplating Instagram as a way to remember to take photo's of things that I can record and share. I will update you with anything new as it happens.

My other blog has been taking up the little bit of free time I have had - again mostly behind the scenes stuff, not a lot of visible happenings there either. I have lots of ideas for resources and materials, but finding the time is difficult. I tend to prioritise my creations based on what our needs are in the tutoring studio, and of course what my own children may need or be interested in.

In an effort to blow off the cobwebs I have some new little social media icons in my sidebar - hopefully I will be adding an IG one to the collection soon.

2016

As 2016 draws to a close I just want to take a moment and give thanks to my readers and supporters. This little blog is a space where I share some of my tutoring work and other educational ideas, materials and thoughts that fall outside of my Montessori elementary work.

It all started last Christmas when I was commissioned to create some resources for an ex-Montessori colleague who teaches remotely. He uses Montessori principles and wanted some Montessori friendly resources that would be flexible for his multi-age classroom. You can see one of these commissions HERE.

Shades of Meaning

Shades of Meaning - Synonyms

I love this work with synonyms - it is a great way to get students thinking about their word choices in both their writing and everyday conversation.

Some ideas for use:

• classifying the degrees of meaning of each synonym
• play charades or password
• allow children to choose 2 - 3 words for sentences or stories
• as a group create sentences and switch synonyms to see how each modifies the sentence

Whales & Grasshoppers

One of the home-school families I do some tutoring with have started looking at whales, so to continue and extend the theme into our tutoring time I made a mini pack of materials that I think could be useful to others as well.

Number Cards

Ok, I will start by acknowledging there are great deal of number cards out there to download. And the majority of them are great/cute/fun/etc. But there is something special about the Montessori style ones you see.

Montessori mathematics is VERY clever and I could write oodles on the topic of just how clever the maths materials you see in Montessori classrooms are. Essentially though, everything has a direct purpose and an indirect purpose (laying the foundation for something else to come). Which brings me to the number cards.

The Montessori number cards, and the way young children are taught to lay out the corresponding counters, are purposeful in the pattern they use. The direct purpose of the cards are for teaching the value of numbers, but the indirect purpose that the pattern prepares the child for is the more abstract concept of odd and even numbers. So whilst it is not explicitly taught at this stage, it is preparing them for concept for when the time comes and providing an opportunity for the child to make this discovery for herself. You may see this pattern in other numeracy materials I have developed.

The file has a set of cards with the numeral and a set with the word. They can be used as three part cards or flash cards depending on your preference and environment. Want to know more about three part cards? Read this.

Desktop Cursive Cards

Last year I made a cursive writing desk top template for some of my students. These are a really handy reference to have for students as they develop their penmanship.

I made one side upper case letters with numerals and lower case with numerals on the reverse side. I have also included a template of upper and lower case letters together, and a set with dotted thirds also.

These are available in two different fonts, D'Nealian and Learning Curve.
