Shades of Meaning

Shades of Meaning - Synonyms

I love this work with synonyms - it is a great way to get students thinking about their word choices in both their writing and everyday conversation.

Some ideas for use:

  • classifying the degrees of meaning of each synonym
  • play charades or password
  • allow children to choose 2 - 3 words for sentences or stories
  • as a group create sentences and switch synonyms to see how each modifies the sentence

This pack includes seven sets of verbs illustrating synonyms and shades of meaning, each set is colour coded but also available in black and white for flexibility.

The pack also includes a record sheet where the student can write their definition of a synonym with spaces to provide examples.

Emotions edition:

This pack includes six sets of emotions illustrating synonyms and shades of meaning, each set is colour coded. These could be used to launch discussion about colour and feelings that could lead into explorations in art or as part of a wider health ed unit relating to feelings.
